In the year 2009, a certain number of events will mark, the fifty years since the death of the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos.

Two new CD releases:

Two Villa-Lobos recordings honored

The April “Diapason d’Or”, a monthly award by the French magazine Diapason that salutes excellent new releases, went to the first in a projected series of the complete Choros by BIS, the Swedish independent record company (CD 1440). John Neschling (Arnold Schoenberg’s great nephew) conducts the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra; Brazilian Pianist Cristina Ortiz ably participates. The centerpiece of this volume is Choros #11 for piano and orchestra (1928), a flowing composition of nearly 65 minutes that the composer himself recorded with the French National Radio Orchestra in Paris for EMI in 1958.

The second award, “Diapason d’Or Arte”, conjointly administered by Diapason magazine and the Franco-German TV station Arte, was granted to the recording of Symphony #10 "Amerindia" for tenor, baritone, bass, choir and orchestra (1952) by the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Stuttgart under the baton of Carl St. Clair, music director of California’s Pacific Symphony. The recording of this ambitious work, written in commemoration of the quadricentennial of the foundation of the city of São Paulo, marks the conclusion of an integral symphony cycle recorded between 1997 and 2000 on the German label CPO (CPO 999 786-2). This prestigious award, announced in the May 2008 issue of Diapason, brings in international seal of approval to this glorious collection.

«I’m looking at you, Ô my sun, I don’t recognize you anymore. »
LEI, Passion 7

“We all know this story. LEI and LUI go through rapture, moaning, doubt, desire, anger, fear, terror, joy and so many other passions. The shadow and the moon are watching the scene, where language and music arise out of the same inflexion. It reminds the Orpheus & Eurydice story. It’s also ours, even if it runs away. We don’t know it totally…” Pascal Dusapin
In his new opera, Pascal Dusapin draws his inspiration from Baroque Art proceedings in order to offer a mirror to our modern condition.
